Doug joined the VFW in April of 2008 at Post 2503 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was promptly recruited to serve on the House Committee and later became the Post Judge Advocate. In 2010, Doug was elected Jr. Vice Commander and went on to serve as the Post Commander for two consecutive terms. In 2012, Doug was elected State Surgeon for the Department of Nebraska and advanced through the chairs to be Department Commander for the 2016-2017 year. He is currently serving as the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Chairperson.
At the National level, Doug is currently serving as the National Judge Advocate; a position he previously held in 2019-2020. In 2020-2021, he was a member of the Article IX review committee which was tasked with reshaping the VFW discipline process. He has also held the position of Co-Chair of the former National OIF/OEF Veterans Committee and has been a member of the by-laws working group.
Doug is currently a Legacy Life Gold member of Post 9675 in Sarpy County, Nebraska.
